Lucent sells gear to Shanghai Telecom

Lucent Technologies will sell $20 million in optical networking equipment to Shanghai Telecom under a new contract announced Monday. Shanghai Telecom will install Lucent's WaveStar line of optical equipment in order to triple the company's local city network capacity. Lucent began shipping the gear in December. A communications-equipment powerhouse, Lucent has fallen on tough times in the past year as the company has been slow to develop newer communications technologies. Sales have suffered as a result, but Lucent is targeting optical hardware and other gear in an effort to change that.
