Imagine putting on a device and seeing R2-D2 and C-3PO suddenly walk around your room in intense debate, as the droids beam a hologram of the Millennium Falcon taking flight off your desk.
Lucasfilm is joining forces with Magic Leap to open a "semi-secret" lab in June, aiming to wash the Star Wars universe over the world around you through the secretive startup's augmented-reality technology.
In augmented reality, digital images are overlaid on top of what you see around you. The companies demonstrated a "proof-of-concept" video that played out that scene, which they said depicted what the user of Magic Leap's technology would see live in the room.
"It's like they're there, minus the atoms," said Magic Leap CEO Rony Abovitz. The lab, which will be based in San Francisco, advances a year-long collaboration with Lucasfilm.
"We've been testing these experiential story moments," he said. "Imagine if the Mos Eisley spaceport is now in the back of your school. Can you theme your life a little bit around 'Star Wars'?"
Abovitz announced the coming lab at the Wired Business Conference in New York on stage with Lucasfilm's chief technology officer, Rob Bredow, and John Gaeta, the creative director from ILMxLab, the interactive technology arm of Lucasfilm and effects firms Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound.
