Lowestfare.com closes ticketing unit

Niche online travel site Lowestfare.com, which stopped selling airline tickets last Thursday, has shut down its airfare consolidator division, Jet Set Tours. According to a company spokeswoman, there was an undisclosed number of layoffs at privately held Lowestfare and at Jet Set Tours. A consolidator of International airfare, Jet Set Tours sold airline tickets primarily to traditional travel agents. Lowestfare continues to sell vacation travel packages. Las Vegas-based Lowestfare has stumbled since losing access to discounted fares from Trans World Airline (TWA) last year. Financier Carl Icahn created Lowestfare primarily to sell the TWA tickets he obtained as the former owner of the airline, but American Airlines bought TWA and canceled Icahn's agreement.
