Microsoft will announce tomorrow that LookSmart will provide Web directory content for the MSN network.

Microsoft and LookSmart have signed a five-year agreement that calls for Looksmart's directory to be integrated into MSN's search. Terms are undisclosed.

The deal comes in the wake of MSN's agreement to incorporate AltaVista's search engine on its Web site.

"We recognize that searching the Web is one of the top reasons for people to come to MSN, and we were especially impressed with Looksmart's comprehensive directory and high-quality editorial content," said Laura Jennings, vice president of MSN, in a statement.

"Within a few months, users of MSN will be able to take advantage of Looksmart's robust Web directory database to quickly and accurately pinpoint the Web destinations that deliver what they're looking for," the statement said.

Looksmart, which is privately held, has more than 8 million page views per day. MSN said its reach extends to about 40 percent of all U.S. Internet users.

Microsoft has been looking to expand its Web presence. Despite its size, it faces intense competition from Yahoo, @Home, and Lycos, among others.
