With one year to go until the London Olympics, the folks at London2012.com have created a new discipline we can see ourselves taking gold in, despite having done no exercise since 1996: competitive tweeting.

It's exactly a year today until the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games open on 27 July, 2012. For 17 days, the cream of the world's athletic crop will compete in 32 Olympic venues, each a monument to modern Britain that will be enjoyed by Britons for generations to come -- such as Stratford's first M&S and a really massive Greggs.

In the meantime, the folks behind the games have challenged each country to get behind their athletes by shot-putting tweets, Flickr photos, and YouTube videos to record-breaking distances.

The top 20 countries are listed on the site. At the time of writing, Blighty is vying with Brazil for gold -- they're neck and neck with 20 per cent of the total tweets each.

To show support for your country's athletes, post a tweet from London2012.com, or send a tweet including the hashtag #1YearToGo with the three-letter code for your country. If you're an Olympic-obsessed Brit, that'll be #1YearToGo #GBR.

Other interactive fripperies to while away the next twelve months with include a game that lets you design your own version of Olympic mascots Wenlock and Mandeville.

Are you excited about the Olympics? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below or on our Facebook page -- and don't forget to tweet #1YearToGo #GBR. On your marks, get set... go!
