Listening to the new 'Ghostbusters' song will make you pine for the original

Fall Out Boy and Missy Elliot answer the eternal question of "Who you gonna call?" in the new theme song for the upcoming "Ghostbusters" movie.

There's a new "Ghostbusters" movie coming out in July and that means we're also getting a new theme song. Sort of. Emo/pop/punk/rock band Fall Out Boy attempts to pay tribute to the original Ray Parker Jr. song known simply as "Ghostbusters" with a fresh tune called "Ghostbusters (I'm Not Afraid)." Here's my take on it: You, Fall Out Boy, are no Ray Parker Jr.

There's a lot of lyrical and melodic crossover, with the new song calling out familiar lines like "If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!" The delivery is pretty angsty compared to Parker's upbeat vocal approach. I also miss those cheesy, catchy synthesizer sounds from the original.

Missy Elliot shows up midway through the song to rap about getting scared while staying alone at home and seeing shadows on the wall. But don't worry. She called the Ghostbusters to kill the ghosts and everything is fine now. The song is a busy mess. It tries valiantly to integrate the past with the modern era, but instead falls on its own sharp sword of sound, eventually drowning in a cacophony of screaming vocals, rapid-fire drums and crunchy guitar licks. That's my opinion. Tell us what you think of the new theme in the comments.
