LG preps new smartphone with separate ticker display
The handset, known as the LG V10, comes at a time when companies are exploring new designs.
LG will launch a smartphone with a secondary "ticker" display as it seeks to stand out from the crowd of typical black slabs.
The device, called the V10, will feature a ticker above the standard display and will launch in early October, according to a person familiar with the company's launch plans. Word of the V10 was first tipped by perennial Twitter leaker Evan Blass.
The idea of dual-display isn't exactly new -- Samsung tried this in 2010 with the Continuum , which featured a ticker screen below the standard display. But it comes at a time when handset vendors are increasingly trying out new designs. Samsung, for instance, has pushed smartphones such as the Galaxy S6 Edge+ with a wraparound display on its sides, while LG has its line of curved Flex smartphones.
Internal hardware isn't advancing at the breakneck pace that it once did, so mobile device makers are starting to get creative. Otherwise, even highly praised companies run the risk of boring their customers with lookalike devices.
As a whole, the V10's hardware closely matches that of the LG G4. Specifically, the upcoming phone will feature a 5.7-inch display with a 2,560-x-1,440-pixel resolution, as well as a 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel camera combination.
The V10 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor with 3GB of RAM, which is the same specifications as the G4's, and it should be able to hang with top Android phones. Other specifications expected in the device include 64GB of internal storage with a microSD expansion card slot for music, movies and other media.
The fourth quarter is shaping up to be rather intriguing on the LG front. The company is expected to launch an updated take on its Nexus 5 at an event on September 29.
