Lenovo ThinkPad T61p: The first Wireless USB laptop

It's not often we get excited about business laptops. But hold the phone -- we've just been sent a Lenovo ThinkPad T61p, and its roll cage and Wireless USB support have set our pulses racing

It's not often we get excited about business laptops. Why should we? They're designed for people who think grey suits are the height of fashion. But hold the phone -- we've just taken receipt of a brand new Lenovo ThinkPad T61p, and it's set our pulses racing.

Okay, so it looks like the laptop equivalent of a station wagon (boxy but good) but you can bet your bottom dollar it's as strong and fast as Volvo's finest. Under the proverbial hood, Lenovo has fitted an internal 'roll cage' -- a protective skeleton-like structure that protects the motherboard and LCD screen from damage.

The T61p is also the first laptop we've seen that features an ultra-wideband (UWB) chip. It's therefore compatible with the Wireless USB and wireless HDMI standards -- which means you can connect it to compatible cameras, tellies and all sorts (which should be available soon) without using cables. Genius.

Until recently this technology was deemed illegal in the UK, due to its potential interference with other wireless devices, but Ofcom has just given it the green light, saying, "UK users will not need a license to use UWB devices when they hit shelves in the future."

UWB isn't the only reason for buying the T61p. Its 15.4-inch screen has a massive 1,920x1,200-pixel resolution and a matte finish so you can actually see what you're doing outdoors. Then there's the 2.4GHz Intel T7700 CPU, 2GB of RAM and hyper-quick Nvidia Quadro FX 570M graphics card.

We've yet to run benchmark tests, but all of this conspired to make the T61p feel like the fastest laptop we've ever used. Plus it's Energy Star 4.0-certified, so it's pretty friendly on the environment, too.

The T61p is out now and costs in the region of £1,600. Watch out for a full review very soon. -Rory Reid
