Market research firm Gartner said in a report Friday that PC shipments in Latin America declined 2.7 percent in the first quarter of 2002 compared with the same period last year. Shipments totaled 1.73 million units, down from 1.78 million last year. Compaq Computer held its No. 1 market share position in Latin America, with 12.9 percent, despite falling shipments. Compaq's shipments fell 27.7 percent for the quarter. Dell Computer's shipments grew 62.7 percent, pushing it past No. 3 Hewlett-Packard and No.4 IBM and into the No. 2 market share position with 6.5 percent.
Notebook PC shipments grew 13.3 percent as a category but made up just 7.7 percent of the overall PC market. Brazil continued to lead the Latin American region in PC shipments despite a slight decline in the quarter. PC shipments in Argentina fell a whopping 83.8 percent in the first quarter.
