Lara Croft captured by pirates

Piracy group reportedly cracks the security behind the Rise of the Tomb Raider video game.

Crystal Dynamics

Pirated video games are nothing new, but before now, security firm Denuvo had a great record of thwarting thieves. According to TorrentFreak, Denuvo's clean streak is over and a pirate group called CONSPIR4CY has cracked the security and posted a free copy of Rise of the Tomb Raider online.

The newest adventure starring Lara Croft has been out for months, so it's unclear how long CONSPIR4CY has been working on this hack, and how long it'll be until Denuvo patches it. A different group managed to work around Denuvo's security this weekend and leaked free copies of Doom, Just Cause 3 and more. But that loophole was soon closed.

According to TorrentFreak, that first break was a workaround. Rise of the Tomb Raider is the first successful crack in Denuvo's security.

Denuvo did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment.
