Laptops of the future coming up at CeBIT 2007
Come check out three of the hottest laptops we reckon will be on show at this year's CeBIT exhibition in Germany
You can always rely on the CeBIT expo in Hanover to conjure a few surprises. While visiting in 2006, we saw the world's first UMPCs from Samsung, Asus and ECS, and we've worked ourselves into a frenzy trying to guess what tech treats will surface this year.
Peering into our shiny crystal ball, we reckon we can just about see the faint glimmer of the Vulcan Flipstart E1001S. This fabled UMPC was vapourware until recently, but we have it on good authority that it exists and will be at CeBIT. Specs-wise, it's said to have a 5.6-inch 1,024x768-pixel screen, a Pentium M CPU and Windows XP. It's the brainchild of Paul G. Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, so it won't be completely rubbish. We hope.
Another curious gadget we're looking forward to is the Flybook VM, which we reported on back in June last year. It has a unique height-adjustable, twin-hinge display that's designed to allow use in tight spaces, such as on an aeroplane. Sounds bizarre if you ask us, but we'll give it a comprehensive fondling at CeBIT before passing judgement.
Last but not least, we're expecting to see the new Samsung M55 HD DVD laptop. Up until recently, Samsung was firmly joined at the hip with Blu-ray, but apparently it's been playing the field, hedging its bets on the rival HD DVD format. The M55 will probably use a 2GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB of RAM, a GeForce 7600 GT graphics card and a (somewhat lame) 120GB hard drive.
Okay, that's enough fondling with our crystal ball for now. We're off to buy a new selection of jumpers and thermal socks for our trip to the freezing cold tech-fest that is CeBIT. Stay with us for the best coverage. -RR
