LAN chip sales stack up
Semiconductor revenues from LAN switch sales are expected to double by the end of the year, a new report says.
Revenues are projected to soar 98.3 percent to $160.2 million as LAN switch sales are expected to triple by the end of the year, IDC reported. The semiconductor industry overall is expected to see a six percent drop in revenues for the year.
IDC also reports that the revenues by semiconductor component type are shifting as well. Sales are on the rise for application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips, which are used in such products as cellular phones, video game consoles, and graphics chipsets.
ASIC revenue of $429.8 million surpassed revenues from microperipheral chips of $419.3 million this year for the first time. Microperipheral chips manage specific tasks and peripherals.
In addition, the ASIC revenue is expected to grow by 52 percent this year.
