L.A. Times Leaves Prodigy for the Web

In a bid to attract more customers and advertisers, the Los Angeles Times has officially announced to move its online newspaper, TimesLink, from Prodigy to the Web by January.

According to some analysts, publications like TimesLink are moving from online services to the Web because revenue is low. "The online services make money, and the content providers don't," said Neil McManus, an analyst with Digital Media. "We're going to see more magazines and news services take it upon themselves to move to the Web," he added.

TimesLink includes daily news and sports articles from the Los Angeles Times. The newspaper will be free, but a charge might apply for access to archived articles, according to Times officials.

Prodigy claims 2.4 million subscribers, and the Internet pulls in about 40 million people, according to industry estimates.
