In a new Super Bowl ad for the BMW i3, they look back to 1994, when they had no idea what an e-mail address was. What was that little @ sign? Did it mean "at?" Couric thought it meant "about."
Gumbel, though, offered the classic quote: "What is Internet anyway?"
He shouldn't have worried.it'll soon be invisible to the eye, just magically floating in the atmosphere and buried inside our brains.
Refreshingly, though, in this ad, the dynamically classic duo still claim to know nothing about tech.
They wonder how there can be nothing under the hood of BMW's new electric car. And what is i3 anyway?
Couric resorts to the very same technological solution she employed in 1994 to learn about this Internet thing. She calls on her assistant, the ephemeral Alison.
She's never heard of Siri?
There's surely a perception that electric cars are bought by the very same people who have "Who's Your Farmer?" stickers on their aging Priuses. They're the young, slightly prissy folks who are desperate to save the world by growing their own legumes.
They're the ones who take pride in their recycled toilet paper and their Kale Flakes breakfast cereal.
Here, though, BMW seems to be appealing to those for whom Couric and Gumbel were icons.
Yes, the older folks who destroyed the planet, gorged themselves on drugs and money and now live in pensioned splendor, while the millennials pay for their health care.
