JVC fixes up its Adixxion POV cam

JVC is back for round two with its Adixxion action cam.

The GC-AX2 takes the same form as its predecessor, the GC-AX1, and makes some needed improvements to stay competitive in the POV category.

With an 8-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, the new model can record in 1080p at 60 frames per second as well as 720p at 120fps for slow-motion playback. It gets a new f2.4 lens with a 137-degree angle of view when recording at 1080p, 720p, or WVGA resolutions and 152 degrees at 960p and for photos. Also, a gyro sensor has been added to improve the camera's digital image stabilization.

Though the original model had built-in Wi-Fi, judging by the user reviews I've seen, the implementation was poor. This time around, JVC claims the Wi-Fi is quicker and the camera can use itself as an access point for streaming live video to a smartphone or to Ustream. You can also upload to YouTube or transfer pictures to your device. The Adixxion app -- available for iOS and Android -- has been updated, too, and gets a new Quad View feature that lets you simultaneously view streams from up to four Adixxion cameras.

Without the need for an additional housing, the XA2 is waterproof to 16.4 feet, shock-proof to 6.5 feet, dustproof, and freeze-proof and weighs 4.8 ounces. The camera's battery is removable, so you're not stuck waiting to recharge before you shoot again, and it records to full-size SD/SDHC/SDXC cards (though none are included). A 1.5-inch 115K dot-resolution LCD is built in, so you can easily set up your shot before you start recording without any additional cost or connecting to a smartphone.

There are tripod mounts on both the bottom and side for mounting flexibility and a wide flexible adhesive mount is included that can be used on flat or curved surfaces. A new chest mount will also be available in addition to six other mounts, a marine case, and other accessories.

The JVC GC-XA2 Adixxion will be available in late July for $299.95, which is $50 less than the original's starting price.
