jOBS film to debut at Sundance, gets US release date
The Steve Jobs film biopic jOBS is set to debut later this week at the Sundance Film Festival, and will open in the US on 19 April.
The Steve Jobs biopic jOBS is set to debut later this week on the last night of the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, and will open in movie theatres around the US on 19 April. When it will reach cinemas in the UK hasn't yet been announced.
Filmed by little-known director Joshua Michael Stern, the indie flick spans the period of the Apple boss' life between 1971 and 2000. Jobs certainly didn't slack off during those three decades, using his time to found Apple, NeXT (not Next) and Pixar.
Ashton Kutcher will star as the man himself, alongside Josh Gad as Jobs' partner in tech, Steve Wozniak. Little else is known about the film at the moment, although it's been described on the Sundance website as "a candid, inspiring and personal portrait of the one who saw things differently".
Kutcher -- also known for the seminal work What Happens in Vegas, the smash TV show Punk'd and being a one-time Mr Demi Moore -- has appeared in promotional material for the film sporting a shiny mop and striking a pose almost identical to that in a photo of Jobs as a young man.
There's no word yet on when the film will be released in the UK, but I for one am very much hoping to see jOBS -- silly name and all -- in a British picture house in the not too distant future. I've contacted the makers of the film about a release date and I'll let you know if I hear anything.
A separate biopic is being penned by Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin, who has likened the pressure of squishing Jobs' achievements into a screenplay to writing about the Beatles.
Supposedly Sorkin's script is based on Walter Isaacson's biography of Jobs and will take place over the course of three scenes, all set before major product launches. There's no word on who will be cast as the lead, but whoever the mystery man is will have to do some serious conditioning to compete with Kutcher's glossy locks.
