'Jessica Jones' only hiring female directors next season
Leave it to the hit Netflix show about a reluctant, complex female superhero with a tragic backstory to shake up the status quo behind the scenes.
Popular Netflix show "Jessica Jones" doesn't just feature a strong female lead, but multidimensional female friendships and a forceful female ally. The show has always stressed that women are just as capable and cunning as their male counterparts, and in Jessica's case, tougher.
Melissa Rosenberg, "Jessica Jones" showrunner and executive producer, wants to make sure Marvel fans understand that the show's commitment to female empowerment isn't just a message in the storyline, but one that drives the action behind the scenes. The show will hire only female directors for the entire second season, Rosenberg said Friday.
Rosenberg announced the all-female directing decision while on a panel at Transforming Hollywood 7: Diversifying Entertainment at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Variety TV critic Mo Ryan first reported the news.
Here's hoping the rest of Hollywood will follow Rosenberg's lead, considering how few shows hire female directors. We're looking at you, "Game of Thrones."
