JavaSoft debuts Java 1.0

JavaSoft, the new Sun Microsystems unit, today unveiled version 1.0 of the Web programming environment. The software is available for downloading.

JavaSoft, the new Web-focused Sun Microsystems unit, has posted version 1.0 of its Web programming environment on the Net. The software is available free on the Java site.

According to company officials, the programming software now includes the Java Applet Viewer for running and testing applets, the Java Compiler, a prototype debugger, and the Java Virtual Machine for running Java programs.

Java 1.0 is available now for Windows 95, Windows NT, and Solaris. A version for Mac OS 7.5 is slated for delivery by the end of this quarter, officials said.
