iWeb 2.0.3: Does not fix publishing issues, backup domain files

Publishing errors persist.

Backup your Domain files Before attempting to apply the iWeb 2.0.3 updae, make a copy of this folder ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain. iWeb updates, including this one, may delete or make inoperable parts of your stored Web site(s). Saving this file can mean the difference between losing or maintaining your current site data.

Does not fix publishing issues for many users Despite our hope yesterday, iWeb 2.0.3 does not -- consistently -- fix an issue in which sites do not publish to .Mac and other servers, instead spitting back error messages.

One reader writes:

"My original issues is an iWeb publishing error stating ' An error occurred while publishing file "/Web/Sites". Try publishing again later.' I have just applied the iWeb updater to 2 machines (Intel 24" iMac and Quad G5 PowerMac both with 10.5.1 and all updates to date). What I have learned. I am having the exact same problem with one .Mac account, however using another account with the same iWeb site publishes fine, which leads me to believe is server related. I have tried both .Mac accounts on both computers and with multiple user accounts. Still unable to update our website."

In fact, a few users report their first encounter with the publishing error after applying iWeb 2.0.3. Michael Grothaus writes:

"Ah, crap. I should have know never to download a new iWeb update before its been out for a few days. Ever since upgrading to 2.0.3 I get the dreaded 'An unknown publishing error has occured.'"

Problems updating Some users have reported problems applying the iWeb 2.0.3 update. Van Patrick Bevill writes:

"Strange update behavior:  The iWeb 2.0.3 update does not appear in Software Update for me on one system, but does on another. Even stranger, when I check for updates from within iWeb, I am notified that the 2.0.3 update is available but then when I click the button to "Launch Software Update" from within iWeb, the 2.0.3 update still does not show up."

iWeb 2.0.3 is also available via standalone download, and we have tutorial on troubleshooting Software Update issues.

Other users report a more serious issue, in which the iWeb application cannot be found by the updater. One reader writes:

"The new iWeb 2.0.3 can't find the iWeb App in the Applications folder.  It's there, always has been, even tried to move it out and then back.  Still get error message 'An eligible iWeb application was not found in the location /Applications.' Look forward to a solution, as I've also been having problems with iWeb prior to this update."

Make sure that iWeb is in the root level of your Applications folder and not a subdirectory; the latter can prevent the installer from seeing the iWeb application in some cases.

In other cases, this issue can be caused by lingering "Previous System" folders left over from Archive and Install processes.

After the Archive and Install, /Previous Systems/Previous System 1 will be created -- or if there is already a Previous System 1 folder, Previous System 2 will be created. You should keep this folder around for a week or two after performing the Archive and Install, in case you need to retrieve any settings or files.

However, you should immediately delete all applications contained in this folder, or you may experience problems with new version of the same applications stored in the default /Applications directory.
