Forums are bustling with reports from frustrated iTunes 9 users who are experiencing hangs and freezes, making Apple's staple media software nearly unusable. Several versions of the complaints exist on this thread in the Apple Support Discussions forum.

Many of the comments echo these sentiments:

Since installing itunes 9, i get a spinning beach ball every couple of seconds/minutes. Sometimes it goes away, but I seem to have to force quit every couple of minutes. I have reinstalled the software twice. Not sure how to fix, as the program is basically unusable now.

Or...

Having a similar problem. When I start iTunes 9, it says that is adusting the music for gapless play, and every time, somewhere between 500 and the 4700 songs I have, I get a spinning ball that never goes away no matter how long I wait. I cannot even force quit!!! I have to to a hard restart. I have tried this five times now and I cannot seem to avoid the spinning beach ball...

Amidst the complaints in this forum, there also exists some suggestions. The simplest one seems to be patience. Apparently iTunes 9 has some issues with large iTunes Libraries. Users report being required to wait several hours, some overnight, for iTunes to finish updating the library information. Once updated, the hangs no longer occur.

Other suggestions include rebuilding your iTunes Library and removing any third-party add-ons. You should also be sure that your current Operating System is fully up-to-date using Software Update. Of course, with all these suggestions, users still report hangs and freezes with iTunes 9. I wrote about my issue with iTunes 9 a few days ago (still unsolved). If you have tried all the suggested troubleshooting and are still experiencing issues with hanging in iTunes 9, you can let Apple know directly.

What has your experience been with iTunes 9? Did you encounter any issues during installation or since? Let us know in the comments!
