For the first time, more early buyers are gravitating to the iPhone Plus than to Apple's leaner flagship phone, according to research firm Slice Intelligence.
In the first 48 hours of preordering that started September 9, 55 percent of buyers ordered the iPhone 7 Plus, according to a Slice blog post published Thursday. By comparison, the majority of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S orders were for the regular model during the first two days of preorders in previous years.
Apple widened the gap between its two flagship phones this year, granting the standout feature -- a dual-lens camera -- only to the bigger, pricier iPhone 7 Plus. Encouraging people to opt for the phone with the higher price tag means Apple squeezes a little extra revenue out of every sale. Apple's incentive: Earlier this year, the company posted its first quarterly revenue drop in more than a decade.
Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
