iPad mini leaked snaps point to Touch ID fingerprint scanner

The new iPad mini boasts a Touch ID fingerprint scanner as seen on the Apple iPhone 5S in these leaked photos.

There's something missing from the Apple iPad mini, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Oh that's it, it's missing the Touch ID fingerprint scanner seen on the Apple iPhone 5S -- but not for long, if leaked photos are to be believed.

Leaked snaps from China's DoNews purportedly show the next iPad mini in the champagne-hued gold paint job first seen on the new iPhone 5S. And like the 5S, it boasts a fingerprint-reading home button.

The first iPad mini went on sale last November, so we're coming up to the time a second generation of the 7.9-inch tablet could put in an appearance. Before you scan your fingers, cross them for a high-resolution Retina Display screen on the new slate.

Apple's Touch ID fingerprint scanner is designed to protect your phone and keep your transactions secure, making it quicker and safer to buy things online and doing away with the need to enter your Apple ID every five bloody minutes. That said, determined hackers have already cracked Touch ID with fake fingerprints.

Touch ID is one of the biggest new features in Apple's latest software update for the iPhone and iPad, iOS 7. For more on the latest Apple software update, check out our handy guide to iOS 7 and all the new features for iPhone and iPad.
