iPad 2 to output Real Racing 2 HD in 1080p for TV gaming thrills
Real Racing 2 HD will soon receive an update that lets you port the game from your iPad to your TV in 1080p, using the tablet as a steering wheel.
If you're looking for a game that will show off your new iPad 2's capabilities, Real Racing 2 HD would be an excellent choice. The game's recently had its graphics bumped up to use the tablet's new dual-core A5 processor and GPU. Now its developer, Firemint, has revealed plans for another update that will let you output the game to your telly in 1080p.
The company explained all in a blog post: "Support for full-screen 1080p output on iPad 2 will be included in the next major update for Real Racing 2 HD. At this resolution, the game looks utterly fantastic and runs at a silky smooth 30 frames per second."
That's means you'll be able to control the game by using your iPad 2 as a steering wheel, while watching the action on your big-screen telly. Firemint says it's the first iOS game to make use of Apple's new 1080p output feature.
The studio hasn't said when the update will be accelerating into the App Store, but it has published a video showing how it will work:
We're hoping that more games will take advantage of the iPad 2's ability to output 1080p visuals to a TV screen, but bear in mind that you'll need to buy Apple's HDMI-out connector to get it all working -- unlike some of its soon-to-launch tablet rivals, the iPad 2 doesn't have a built-in HDMI port.
Real Racing 2 HD is just one of the games whose visuals have been beefed up for the A5 processor. We recommend Infinity Blade, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD and Dead Space for iPad, which have all been given a similar overhaul.
