iOS 7 snags 78 percent of all Apple devices

Apple's iOS 7 continues to sweep up more users.

Launched in September, the latest version of iOS is now installed on 78 percent of all iPhones, iPads, and iPods, according to Apple. That leaves 18 percent for iOS 6 and 4 percent for earlier versions. The stats were measured by the App Store during the seven-day period ending Sunday.

The new numbers show continuing growth for iOS 7. In mid-October, iOS 7 was installed on 64 percent of all iOS devices. And earlier in December, Apple's App Store data noted 74 percent adoption.

The number would be higher if iOS 7 actually supported all Apple devices. But the latest version is persona non grata on iPhones prior to the iPhone 4, iPods before the fifth-generation iPod Touch, and the original iPad.
