Intel gets PCs under control
The chip giant releases the next wave of technology intended to make the PC more manageable.
Delivering on a previously announced strategy, the company will ship a new 10/100-mbps Ethernet adapter card that offers administrators the ability to remotely turn on, boot, and service a PC. It includes management capabilities from LANDesk Service Agent software and IBM's Wake on LAN utility, which enable one to remotely update software or perform management tasks such as virus scans.
The adapter card is the chip firm's latest step in making good on its promise to lower the total cost of PC ownership. Intel announced its strategy in this area last fall at a New York event dubbed Wired for Management.
The card will be available this month for integration into third-party PCs.
