Belgian professor reports medical advance that could help more than 300,000 sight-impaired Europeans.

Regaining lost sight

Researchers around the world are developing technology to help restore sight to the visually impaired. At Belgium's Catholic University of Louvain, Prof. Claude Veraart is working on a system that combines a small camera and an electronic device implanted behind the eye. The system is akin to a cochlear implant that aids in hearing.

Regaining lost sight

Dutch researcher Peter Meijer developed a nonsurgical technique for helping the visually impaired "see" their surroundings. A video camera mounted on sunglasses translates images into sound; software is located in the backpack.
