iMac gets a mega-thin makeover, Mac mini refreshed too
We love a redesign, we do. Apple's given its desktop computer a revamp, and a super-skinny frame.
Apple has given its iMac desktop computer a long-overdue makeover, turning the monolithic desktop into something a little skinnier.
The redesigned iMac is extremely thin -- 5mm at the edge, and bulging out in the middle. It has four USB 3.0 ports, as well as three Thunderbolt ports. Intel Core i5 and i7 processors are on board, as well as a host of capacity options, including 768GB of flash storage or a 3TB HDD.
You can beef up this iMac with up to 32GB of RAM -- handy if you're engaged in professional video editing or other intensive tasks.
There are some downsides. There doesn't seem to be an optical drive, and the bezel around the screen looks rather chunky, despite the panel itself being very thin. That prevents this new iMac from looking as flashy as it could, at least at first blush. There's also no retina display. Boo!
The 27-inch version begins with a quad-core Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. That'll cost £1,499, or £1,699 for a faster chip and graphics processor.
The smaller 21.5-inch version starts with a 2.7GHz quad-core processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. For that chunk of tech expect to shell out at least £1,099, going up to £1,249.
The Mac mini has been given an overhaul too. The latest model has four USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader, an HDMI port and Intel Core i5 and i7 chips. Apple says it's the "smallest, most affordable Mac". The new version costs £499, which gets you a 2.5GHz dual-core processor with a 500GB hard drive and 4GB of RAM. Expect to pay £679 if you opt for more potent components.
