I'll pay more for better Net access

In response to the May 3 article, "Broadband Net rates continue to climb":

It's easy to be suspicious of the phone and cable companies' motives in raising the DSL rates. However, if I remember right, they have also been absorbing exorbitant losses in the past couple of years investing in the deployment of DSL, cable modem service and fixed wireless. They have every right to recover their costs.

Before you flame me, I would like to also say that I hope that the increased prices come with greater reliability of service during installation and for continued and faster service. I also hope this means they will have the resources now to continue expanding coverage.

I would rather pay higher prices and have service than pay lower prices and eventually end up with no service at all. I live in a suburb of Dallas. The area is well-populated and has average household incomes in the six figures. Yet I cannot get any DSL or cable modem service. This is ridiculous.

Frankly, the whole competition thing that Congress came up with does not appear to have worked to anyone's favor (except a few lucky insiders in the IPO market). The ILECs and CLECs are going out of business. AT&T, a once reliable business, is deep in debt and unable to deliver on their promise of cable modem service; their reputation for service is also way down. The regional Bells do not appear up to the task of deploying millions of DSL lines efficiently. Sometimes I wonder if these people are stuck in the Stone Age with their rhetoric and union rules.

Cooperation and a national sense of purpose can work better than competition, monopoly or no monopoly. Is that worse than chaos? I hope you will take this letter as a chance to consider an article on the subject and what we should do about our communications infrastructure on a national scale. Europe and Japan have succeeded in deploying the next generation of technology where we have failed miserably.
