We may have to wait until December for the next Star Wars film to hit the big screen, but we can satisfy our craving for space battles and lightsaber duels on a smaller screen. The next season of popular animated series "Star Wars Rebels" debuts Wednesday in the US at 9:30 p.m. local time on Disney XD. (Fans in the UK and Australia, check your local Disney XD website for the time and date of the next season of "Star Wars Rebels.")

"Star Wars Rebels" tells the backstory behind the Rebel Alliance, 14 years after the events from "Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith." The main story centers on a ragtag crew made up of cowboy Jedi Kanan (voiced by Freddie Prinze, Jr.), ace pilot Hera (Vanessa Marshall), street-smart teenager Ezra (Taylor Gray), the "muscle" Zeb (Steven Blum), warrior firebrand Sabine (Tiya Sircar) and grumpy old astromech droid Chopper.

The new season kicks off with "The Lost Commanders," which has the Rebel crew on a mission to find and recruit a veteran war hero. However, after the crew learns that their new friend is an old clone, their trust issues put the mission in danger.

For fans of the previous animated series from Lucasfilm, "The Clone Wars," this episode features some familiar faces. We'll get to see a much older Captain Rex along with Commanders Gregor and Wolffe (all voiced by Dee Bradley Baker). As an avid fan of the Clone troopers, I'm excited to see them finally show up in "Star Wars Rebels" as interesting allies for Ezra and the rest of the crew.

If the new "Star Wars Rebels" New York Comic Con 2015 trailer is anything to go by, we know this season is jam-packed with new and beloved characters, exciting battles and of course plenty of Darth Vader. We'll also see the Seventh Sister ( Sarah Michelle Gellar) in action this season. We can't wait.
