ICANN signs .museum deal

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which sets standards for the Web's address system, has signed a deal that lets the Museum Domain Management Association (MuseDoma) oversee the .museum domain. ICANN said the new domain is limited to bona fide museums, their professional associations and individual members of the museum community. The founding members of MuseDoma, a nonprofit organization, are Paris-based International Council of Museums and Los Angeles-based J. Paul Getty Trust. In November, ICANN added seven new domain name suffixes--.museum, .biz, .info, .aero, .name, .coop and .pro.--and chose a handful of companies to administer them. ICANN said it expects .museum will become a functioning domain by early November. The organization added that more than 500 museums have already requested their .museum domain names as part of an early registration process that lasts though October.
