IBM has won a $1 billion outsourcing contract with Invensys, a U.K. manufacturing technology conglomerate, the companies said Friday. Invensys has agreed to pay IBM Global Services, IBM's consulting arm, $100 million a year for up to 10 years to take over its day-to-day information technology operations in more than 12 countries, including maintenance of servers, Web sites, business applications, 29,000 workstations, and the IT help desk.
The deal includes an agreement with IBM Research, the $6 billion research and development unit of IBM. Invensys can use technologies from IBM research that are not yet commercially available, including work the group is doing on e-business software and standards and embedded computers. IBM Research provides similar assistance to the Bank of Nova Scotia and Air Canada.
