IBM has boosted its High Performance Switch, a networking product that links several Unix servers into a single computing resource, the company said Friday. A free software update lets the HPS deliver messages from one computer to another in 5.6 instead of 10.3 microseconds when connecting IBM's p690 Unix servers. Networking speeds using standard Internet protocols or the Message Passing Interface, or MPI, also are faster.
In addition, the switch now can connect 64 p690 machines instead of 32. The switch line is used in the existingsupercomputer and the forthcoming .
