IBM offers Java video software license

IBM has begun offering licenses to Java software that can be used to encode video for streaming over a network, the company said Thursday. The technology was developed by IBM's research group and has been available for evaluation at the company's AlphaWorks site, used to assess customer opinions and interest in new technologies from Big Blue.

Licensing fees for the software, which encodes and decodes video using the MPEG-4 standard from the Motion Picture Experts Group, begins at $500. A fuller license that permits a licensee to distribute the software externally and entitles it to all future updates costs $5,000, said Marc Goubert, head of the AlphaWorks project. The software doesn't come with support or warranties.
