Add Big Blue to the lengthy list of vendors announcing network-attached storage products.
A new addition to IBM's StorageSmart line, the 3466 is a fully configured hardware and software product for automated backups, recoveries, and storage management functions. The box is capable of storing up to 40 terabytes of data from network attached nodes, such as servers and desktops.
The 3466 does not need a separate server or network management software package to service a local area network's storage needs.
It includes WebShell, a browser interface that allows desktop users to back up data via the Internet or internal intranet. Telecommuters can also take advantage of the easy-to-use interface to store or collect data to or from the network. It also includes IBM's ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager software.
The 3466 Network Storage Manager is expected to be available by year's end. IBM will disclose pricing at shipment.
