IBM hangs onto top spot in Hong Kong
Big Blue has kept its rank as No. 1 PC seller in Hong Kong for three years running, but China's Legend Holdings still beats everyone else for the entire Asia-Pacific region.
IBM maintained its position as Hong Kong's No. 1 PC seller for three years running when it clinched the top spot for the most recent quarter.
Big Blue's market leadership for the third quarter is by both revenue and shipment, according to market researcher IDC Asia Pacific. The Armonk, N.Y.-based company shipped 41,789 PCs there, generating revenues of $66.4 million. IBM's market share for the period was 23.9 percent.
However, IBM could not establish the same lead for the entire Asia-Pacific region.
China's Legend Holdings secured its position as the region's top seller, with about 660,000 units shipped in the third quarter. That compares with 618,000 units in the same period last year.
IBM came in second place with about 346,000 units, while Compaq Computer was third with 326,000 units. Dell Computer leapt ahead of Samsung to clinch fourth position, with 285,000 units.
"Contributing to this robust performance was Dell's aggressive push in China in both the consumer and commercial segments," IDC said.
