HTC One X gets Android, Sense updates -- no, not Jelly Bean

Owners of HTC's quad-core beast are getting a bit of a software spit and polish, while they wait for the big fat Jelly Bean update.

One X owners brace yourselves for an Android update being released by HTC today. No, not Jelly Bean. Don't get overexcited. This is an iterative change to Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS).

The Android 4.0.4 update brings improvements to phone functions such as the camera, a smoother screen rotation performance and general stability improvements, according to Google.

Big G also says 4.0.4 is better at recognising phone numbers. Bless.

The One X update isn't just an Android refresh -- it also includes tweaks to HTC's Sense interface which sits on top of Ice Cream Sandwich.

This newly polished up Sense includes various extras and changes, including giving One X owners the ability to map the menu function to the recent apps key -- which HTC says can improve visual presentation in non-ICS apps such as Facebook.

Other changes include better tab management in the browser -- with a dedicated tab switching button -- and enhanced camera capabilities, including white balance and continuous autofocus.

HTC also reckons the update will bring general enhancements to memory, platform stability and the overall browsing experience.

Plus you get a Single Sign-On for Facebook so you can stay plugged into Zuck's matrix across different apps and browsers.

Lastly, HTC says to expect improvements to Beats audio tech -- so presumably your phone will sound slightly better, although that largely depends upon what you're listening to.

Asked when One X owners can expect the wibbly-wobbly goodness of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to bounce onto their handsets, the company provided the following excitement-strewn statement:

"We know HTC fans are excited to get their hands on Google's latest version of Android. At this point in time, we can confirm that we have plans to upgrade our HTC One X, HTC One XL and HTC One S to Jelly Bean. Please stay tuned for more updates regarding device upgrades, timings and other details about HTC and Jelly Bean.

"We are excited about the latest update for Android, Jelly Bean, and are currently reviewing its features and functionality to determine upgrade plans for our product portfolio. While our goal is to bring the latest software updates to as many of our recent devices as possible, we are committed to maintaining every phone's performance and usability first. Please stay tuned for updates on specific device upgrade plans."
