HTC Desire to get Android 2.2 update this weekend: It's official
The Android 2.2 update for the HTC Desire will start rolling out this weekend, but people who bought their phones on contract may have to wait weeks
HTC has confirmed the Android 2.2 Froyo update will be rolling out to HTC Desires across Europe this weekend -- but only those who bought their phones unlocked, rather than on contract, will taste the sweet frozen-yoghurt goodness for now.
Versions of the operating system for the different networks have to be tweaked and tested, so most of us will have to wait "several weeks" to see the update. That's a conservative estimate if the HTC Hero's tortuous upgrade to Android 2.1 is anything to go by.
"As well as including the complete set of Android 2.2 features, the update will contain a few special additions of our own through the latest iteration of HTC Sense," added an HTC spokesperson. Sense is the company's custom user interface, which sits on top of Android and generally makes it prettier and easier to use.
Desires will get 720p video recording, the app-sharing widget we first saw on the HTC Wildfire, a new multi-language keyboard and enhanced caller ID.
HTC says the update won't wipe your phone, but it's a big file, so it recommends you connect to a Wi-Fi network before downloading it. You should get notified that Froyo is ready to download automatically when your phone checks for updates.
Dutch HTC exec Mark Moons leaked the news Wednesday on his Twitter feed. As the Dutch say, "Als je geen kop heeft je kan niet uit het raam kijken." That literally means, "If you don't have a head, you can't look out the window," which we translate as "think before you post company secrets on Twitter".
