HP to replace defective parts

Hewlett-Packard announces that it will replace millions of defective cartridges for its popular ink jet machines.

Hewlett-Packard (HWP) said today that it will replace millions of defective cartridges for its popular ink jet machines.

The black ink cartridges--used for HP's DeskJet and DeskWriter 300 and 500 series, OfficeJet combination printer, fax, copier machines, and DesignJet plotters series 200, 220 and 600--print less than half of the 1,000 text pages they are should. The problem affects one in 10 cartridges with part numbers 51626A, 51629A, and 51633M, according to the company.

HP said customers may return the defective products to retailers or call 208/323-2551 and replacements will be sent out within three business days.

The company said it discovered the problem during lab tests in May and did not say why it delayed announcement of the defective cartridges. Cartridges currently in stores are not affected, according to HP.
