HP releases digital-music appliance

Hewlett-Packard has begun shipping a digital-music/computing appliance. The HP Digital Entertainment Center de100c, which features a 40GB hard drive, allows consumers to download music from the Internet and play it on a home stereo. The device can also used to catalog music, play CDs, store digital music from up to 750 CDs, burn CDs and transfer songs to digital-audio players. Announced in June, the Digital Entertainment Center will sell for about $999 at retailers Best Buy and Circuit City.
