HP console manages databases

Users of Hewlett-Packard's (HWP) popular OpenView enterprise management software got a boost today as the company announced that it is adding database administration to the package.

The new software tools garnered through a licensing agreement with UniPrise Systems will stretch HP's management platform to a database management arena dominated by companies such as BMC Software.

The UniPrise tools can be installed and configured via the central OpenView management console. They can then provide an administrator with monitoring information and allow the user to program automatic responses to database performance issues. The software also includes analysis and filtering capabilities, as well as agent technology that reduces communications between the database and management server.

From a central OpenView console, an administrator will now be able to manage elements of database software from Oracle and Informix Software. The move by HP continues a resurgence of interest in OpenView by the company, which recently added Web-based capabilities to the tool.

Analysts have said applications management will be a key area as the network management market evolves and companies such as HP, Tivoli Systems, and Computer Associates try to differentiate themselves with new functions in their management software.

Terms of the licensing deal were not available. UniPrise Systems is an Irvine, California-based company that specializes in database middleware and management tools. Prices for the new add-ons start at $500.
