Apple announced HomeKit support for security cameras at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday with the MFi-chip-equipped $199 August Doorbell Cam and upcoming second-gen Kuna products listed as the first compatible devices. Up until this point, the platform has been limited to smart plugs, sensors and select other gadgets.
The tech giant also unveiled a dedicated HomeKit app today and said it's making Siri available to third-party apps to expand its voice control support. Combined, these things have potential to help HomeKit catch up to Amazon's Alexa and Google/Alphabet's Nest platform in the smart-home industry.
Even with all of these announcements, HomeKit is still far behind the competition in terms of third-party integrations. Just check out the infographic to the right to see Apple's partnerships stacked up against Amazon and Google/Alphabet. We'll be testing out the August and Kuna integrations as soon as they're available, so stay tuned for updates.
