Lucent Technologies will add a new dimension to the storage industry. The optical and networking giant announced Tuesday a new venture called InPhase Technologies. Longmont, Colo.-based InPhase will use technology from Lucent's Bell Labs to design holographic storage systems. Unlike other methods that record data only on the surface of a disc, holographic data storage allows recording through the entire thickness of the material.
InPhase's storage technology will address problems with capacity and transfer rates of current media by adding a third dimension. This third dimension will allow data to be written on top of data, increasing the storage capacity of media. "A third dimension is a quantum leap in density. It allows for data to overlap instead of having to be stored serially," Nelson Diaz, chief executive at InPhase, said in a statement.
