Hitachi-LG drive to use Intersil design

Intersil announced Wednesday that its laser diode design will be used in a new Hitachi-LG Data Storage disk drive, the GSA-4040B, which will support multiple DVD and CD recordable and rewritable formats. The Hitachi-LG drive will be available in June and will support DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, CD-R and CD-RW formats. Hitachi-LG Data Storage is a joint venture of Hitachi and LG Electronics, which was established in November 2000 and develops, designs and markets optical disk drives in Japan and Korea.

Intersil's Elantec EL6918C is the design used in the Hitachi-LG drive and is available to manufacturers for $3.80 in 10,000-unit quantities.
