It's just like meeting with Vladimir Putin, but with jokes.

Running for president involves certain rites of passage.

The only problem is that those rites stretch out over two years or more.

Still, one of those rites involves appearing on entertainment shows.

Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton clearly steeled herself for an appearance on comedy website Funny or Die's "Between Two Ferns."

Should you be unfamiliar with this show, it essentially involves tolerance of Zach Galifianakis.

The president has managed it. His potential successor was told she must do the same.

So there she sat, as Galifianakis tried to scare her, insult her, mock her and speak inanities beyond those of most humans.

This, the jaundiced might muse, may prepare her well for her upcoming debates with Donald Trump.

Galifianakis offered sexist garbage. This included wondering what would happen if Clinton became pregnant.

He tossed in that, for many young people, she'd be the first white president.

Which engendered this question: "When you see how well it works for Donald Trump, do you ever think to yourself, 'Maybe I should be more racist'?"

At this point, you fancied that Clinton was looking with at least one eye at her advisers who made her endure this amusement.

"I really regret doing this," she said.

And it all ended with a Donald Trump ad and an email joke.

A couple of Clinton's withering looks will surely come in useful, should she be elected.

I fancy that a couple of her young advisers will have received such looks after this appearance.

I fancy they'd have told her: "Don't worry, the millennials will love you for it. And Trump will never do it."
