The Animus is ready, and Michael Fassbender looks primed to take on the role of a deadly assassin in the upcoming "Assassin's Creed" movie loosely based on the video game series of the same name.

Yahoo Movies on Thursday posted the first image of Fassbender in character for the upcoming movie, and the German-Irish actor looks pretty deadly. Fassbender will play the role of Callum Lynch, a role that was created solely for the "Assassin's Creed" movie and hasn't appeared in any of the video games in the series.

According to Yahoo, Lynch learns that he's a descendant of the ancient group known as the Assassins, and by unlocking genetic memories he will be able to take on the role of Aguilar, an Assassin in 15th-century Spain. As in the games, Lynch will unlock these secrets using the Animus, a virtual-reality program created by the fictional corporation Abstergo Industries.

Lynch will use the skills he learns as Aguilar to fight the Assassins' historical enemy -- the Templars -- in modern times. You can see what Fassbender will look like as Lynch (or, more accurately, as Aguilar), in Yahoo's exclusive image at the top of this post.

"Assassin's Creed" is slated for release in theaters in the US and UK in December 2016.
