Harrowing 'Passengers' trailer goes from space romance to space disaster

Love and technology-gone-wrong highlight the dramatic new trailer for upcoming space flick "Passengers."

Aw, it's so cute. Jim Preston (Chris Pratt of "Jurassic World" and "Guardians of the Galaxy") asks Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence of "Hunger Games") out on a date using a robot as the messenger. But you can't put two people in space alone together and expect everything to be hunky-dory. The official trailer for lost-in-space epic "Passengers" quickly takes a turn for danger and darkness.

The movie's premise revolves around a group of passengers in hibernation aboard the spaceship Avalon on a long voyage to a new planet. They're meant to sleep for 120 years, but a malfunction wakens Preston and Aurora 90 years early. There's a robot bartender, a bit of romance and a whole lot of technology going haywire. "Something's wrong. Something big," Preston says.

The film will involve making out, an attempt to save the spaceship, some knockout visuals, mysterious secrets and an appearance by veteran actor Laurence Fishburne. If you're into space drama, "Passengers" will probably land on your big-screen wish list for the holidays. It looks like it will fall right in line with recent sci-fi blockbusters like "Gravity," "Interstellar" and "The Martian."

"Passengers" opens on December 21 in the US, December 23 in the UK and January 1 in Australia.
