Harmonic releases new optical gear

Harmonic introduced new equipment Wednesday for optical networks. The products, collectively called GIGALight, include equipment that sends and receives information over glass fiber-optic wires using light pulses. The equipment uses dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology, which is a way to send many signals through one fiber by transmitting light pulses in different wavelengths. Harmonic joins other equipment makers like Nortel Networks and Redback Networks, that are churning out products to help phone service carriers upgrade their networks. The gear will also work on various types of network protocols, such as ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) and SONET (synchronous optical network), which communications service carriers use to transport data within or between cities. The equipment also works on Gigabit Ethernet protocols, which run on networks that cover small geographical areas.
