Compaq veterans will predominate among the management team of the newly spun-off AltaVista Web portal unit, a company spokeswoman said in responding to an internal document.

Many former Compaq hands with backgrounds in managing computer hardware will run the AltaVista subsidiary. The management team will report to newly appointed president and chief executive Rod Schrock.

Ken Barber, who was formerly vice president of finance for the Tandem Division, will be AltaVista?s chief financial officer. Kurt Losert will continue as vice president and general manger of AltaVista search. Stephanie Lucie, formerly Compaq senior counsel, will become general counsel.

Greg Memo, previously a Presario Mobile vice president, will become vice president and general manager of business and technology strategy. Former Presario desktop director Mike Rubin will become vice president and general manager of e-commerce. And Ronnie Ward, former vice president of enterprise solutions, will become vice president and general manager of e-services.

Compaq last week announced that it would spin off its AltaVista unit in hopes of taking the new subsidiary to an initial public offering.
