Microsoft's Games with Gold free game promotion will continue indefinitely for the Xbox 360, offering Xbox Live Gold subscribers two free games every month. The giveaway was previously only confirmed to run until the end of 2013.

Gold subscribers on the Xbox 360 are currently able to download Halo 3 for free until midnight on October 31. Microsoft has also made some Halo 3 multiplayer map packs available at no cost and discounted others.

Halo 3, the third game in Bungie's sci-fi franchise of the same name, was released in 2007 for the Xbox 360. It was met with a hugely positive critical reception, gaining a score of 94 on Metacritic. Halo 3's multiplayer mode has had a continued cult following since the game's release.

The Games with Gold initiative is a move by Microsoft to make Xbox Live Gold more appealing, with two free game downloads per month. The first game is made available for download from the 1st to the 16th of each month and the second from the 16th to the 31st. Previous Games with Gold titles include Fable 3, Dead Rising 2, Assassin's Creed 2 and Rainbow Six: Vegas.

The games can be kept and played indefinitely, even if the downloader lets their Gold subscription lapse. However, active Xbox Live Gold players that are banned for bad behaviour will lose access to their free games.

Halo 3 can be downloaded by any Xbox Live Gold subscriber until the end of October; the 5.8GB download is currently advertised on the Xbox 360's main title screen.
