Thanks to Doritos, I just devoured a movie soundtrack.
No, there isn't a CD packed in, or an MP3 voucher code or thematic cassette. The physical bag is the player, complete with a headphone jack, controls and even a Micro-USB port for recharging. At least it's supposed to be. The music player is sandwiched inside foam at the bottom of the bag and doesn't easily stay aligned with the music controls on the outside.
To consistently connect the included headphones with the player, I needed to open the top of the bag and remove a smaller bag of Doritos inside (addictive Nacho Cheese; sorry Cooler Ranch fans). Ditto for the buttons -- the power button in particular seemed to need a specific touch.
When you do get the player going, the front of the bag lights up like a disco light, and it looks really cool in a dimly lit room.
As with the first Guardians film, the soundtrack is a great listen, just not using the bag. Using both the included headphones and a separate speaker, fun songs like "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac and "Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)" by Looking Glass sound, well, crunchy. But, as Engadget noted and I can confirm, you can copy the MP3 files out of the bag by connecting it to a computer using the Micro-USB cable. Those files are DRM-free and sound much better when played somewhere else.
You won't want to throw out the box either: when the bag is inside and stood up, it looks like a decorated Guardians of the Galaxy speaker.
However, at a cost of $30 (roughly £20, AU40), there are easier and cheaper ways to get ahold of the soundtrack and some good Guardians merch. The bag quickly sold out on the Doritos Amazon page, and it's definitely not novelty enough to be worth anywhere from the $120 to $500 it's going for on eBay right now (roughly £90 to £380 or AU$160 to AU$670).
If you must get ahold of this musical Doritos bag, Frito-Lay will be giving away a few more to fans Friday over social media. There will also be in-person events in New York City and Los Angeles.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is already out in Australia and the UK, and hits the US on May 5.
